What is sleep apnea?  Sleep apnea is a disorder marked by breathing irregularities during sleep caused by obstruction of the airway. Individuals with sleep apnea may experience multiple breathing interruptions, whereby breathing starts and stops for periods of time.

The breathing lapses pose health risks and result in poor quality of sleep. The condition has adverse effects on oxygen supply. Sleep apnea is among the many sleep disorders that affect individuals of all ages and gender. Due to the potential health risks caused by sleep apnea, it is critical to understand the causes of this condition, symptoms, and available treatment options.

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

There are a range of factors may accelerate this condition, including:

Age

Older adults are at a higher risk of developing sleep apnea than young individuals.  As the body gets older, the muscles weaken and loose tone, making the patient’s airway more susceptible to collapsing and obstruction.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption can contribute to sleep apnea symptoms. While drinking before bed may make you sleepy at first, it actually doesn’t help your overall sleep quality. Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat, which can lead to an airway obstruction.

Unhealthy Weight

Overweight individuals are at a higher risk of developing sleep apnea. Approximately 40% of obese individuals have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, howiever a significant number reported decreased sleep apnea symptoms after losing weight. When a person gains weight, there is more  fat deposits around the throat, leading to an increased of the likelihood of developing sleep apnea.

Medical Issues

There is a strong corrrelation between sleep apnea and many health issues, the most common including: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack,  and stroke.  This is the main reason individuals with sleep apnea can go undiagnosed because they think their symptoms are related to a known health condition and are unaware they may be suffering from sleep apnea as well.
